Overview
SCS Global manufactures DNV 2.7-1 cargo containers for offshore crane lifting on platforms, FPSOs, and supply vessels. Available in 10ft, 20ft, and half-height configurations, these certified offshore freight containers are built factory-direct with full classification society certification and engineering documentation. SCS builds them as part of our range of DNV offshore containers A DNV 2.7-1 container is classified as a cargo carrying unit (CCU): a certified offshore freight container engineered for dynamic crane lifting. Unlike standard ISO shipping containers designed for static stacking, offshore CCUs carry crash frames to absorb impact loads, certified pad-eyes for four-leg sling attachment, and marine-grade coating systems rated for continuous saltwater exposure.
Specifications
SCS DNV 2.7-1 offshore containers are built to Q345/S355 structural steel with corten shell, SA 2.5 blast preparation, epoxy primer, and marine topcoat, meeting the offshore container standard required by DNVGL-ST-0009. The three standard configurations cover the majority of platform supply, deck cargo, and equipment transfer operations. Custom dimensions and MGW ratings up to 25,000 kg are available.

Sizes
Offshore cargo containers come in three standard DNV-certified configurations: 10ft (MGW 11,500 kg), 20ft (MGW 16,500 kg), and 20ft half-height (MGW 20,000 kg). The 10ft suits general freight, tools, and equipment on space-constrained platforms; the 20ft handles drilling equipment, spares, and bulk consumables. The 1,400 mm half-height stores pipe, tubulars, and bulk cargo where full-height boxes waste vertical space, with open-top and flush-panel options for crane loading from above. Custom dimensions and MGW up to 25,000 kg are available.
Service Units
DNV 2.7-2 is the certification standard for Portable Offshore Units: containers with habitability, electrical, HVAC, or operational requirements beyond basic freight. The freight standard (2.7-1) certifies the container structure: material, welding, and structural load testing. The service standard (2.7-2) covers the complete fitted module, including workshops, control rooms, laboratories, and accommodation with electrical, ventilation, and fire protection. A plain cargo container needs only 2.7-1; any electrical, HVAC, or habitable fit-out requires the added 2.7-2 scope. SCS builds to both standards from one facility with dual-standard documentation.
Compliance
Offshore cargo containers carry DNVGL-ST-0009 structural certification and EN 12079 European harmonised standard compliance, with CSC safety approval for international transport. DNV container certification requires design review by a classification society, material traceability through mill certificates, qualified welding procedures (WPS/PQR), MPI and NDT inspection on all critical welds, prototype load testing, sling certification, dimensional inspection, and DFT coating inspection. Every DNV 2.7-1 container carries a certification plate issued by the reviewing classification society. SCS offers buyer's choice of classification society: DNV, BV type approval through Bureau Veritas, LR type approval from Lloyd's Register, ABS, SGS, or Intertek.

Configuration Options
SCS manufactures offshore cargo containers with standard and custom configurations, built on the same line against the same DNV testing regime.
Standard and custom designs for impact protection during crane operations.
Custom configurations for specific crane and lifting requirements.
Increased internal height for oversized cargo.
Top-loading cargo via crane, including offshore open-top variants for top-access loading.
Single-leaf, double-leaf, and side-opening options.
Internal fit-out for tools, equipment, and organised storage, plus lighting and electrical installations.

RAL colour coding to operator specification (standard RAL 5013 Cobalt Blue and RAL 1023 Traffic Yellow).
Applications
DNV-certified cargo containers serve operators across oil and gas, marine and offshore construction, defence marine logistics, and remote resource projects requiring crane-rated containerised freight. DNV certification is required for all crane lifting between vessel and platform.
Deck cargo transfer between supply vessels and fixed or floating installations, equipment and spares storage on production platforms, and freight handling on FPSOs.
Freight handling during offshore wind farm construction, pipeline installation, and decommissioning campaigns where dynamic crane lifting is standard practice.
Certified cargo containers for naval supply, defence marine logistics, and government offshore programmes requiring DNV 2.7-1 crane-rated freight.
Mine sites and remote resource operations specify crane-rated containers where dynamic lifting between transport and site is standard practice.

hazardous area modulesFAQ
Three questions procurement and engineering ask most often about DNV cargo containers.
Containers certified under DNV 2.7-1 (DNVGL-ST-0009) are offshore freight units rated for dynamic crane lifting on platforms, FPSOs, and supply vessels. Certification requires design review by a classification society, material traceability through mill certificates, qualified welding to WPS/PQR standards, and prototype load testing.
DNV offshore containers carry crash frames for impact protection, classification-society-certified pad-eyes for crane lifting, and marine-grade coating systems for saltwater environments. Standard ISO shipping containers are designed for static stacking and intermodal transport. They are not rated for dynamic offshore crane lifting and do not carry DNV or EN 12079 certification.
Standard offshore container sizes are 10ft (2,991 x 2,438 x 2,591 mm, MGW 11,500 kg) and 20ft (6,058 x 2,438 x 2,591 mm, MGW 16,500 kg). Half-height 20ft containers (1,400 mm external height, MGW 20,000 kg) are available for pipe, tubular, and bulk cargo storage. Custom dimensions and ratings up to 25,000 kg gross weight are available.
