Personnel Transfer

Crane Baskets & Personnel Transfer

Personnel transfer baskets are crane-lifted platforms for moving workers between vessels and offshore installations; every crane basket of this type is certified to DNV 2.7-1 and EN 12079, with capacity from 2 to 8 persons. Each includes guardrails at minimum 1,100 mm, a non-slip floor, harness points, a self-closing gate, and high-visibility paint. A crane man basket (also called a man riding basket) is a crane-suspended platform for personnel lifting offshore and onsite. Every unit is proof-load tested to 2.0 times SWL with MPI/NDT on all critical welds.

Cargo

Offshore Cargo Baskets

Offshore cargo baskets are open-top, crane-rated containers for transferring equipment and materials between supply vessels and platforms, certified to DNV 2.7-1 and EN 12079. SCS manufactures 10ft and 20ft full-width (2,438 mm) standard cargo baskets plus custom sizes from 4ft to 8ft widths. Each offshore lifting basket includes steel floor with anti-slip finish, forklift pockets, internal tie-down points, corner castings for stacking, and a 4-leg certified sling set with shackles. The 4ft-wide is the most common offshore cargo basket, with 34+ standard sizes in production globally.

Frog personnel transfer basket with gate entry

Frog Baskets

Frog Personnel Transfer Baskets

A frog personnel transfer basket (Billy Pugh style) is an open-frame, net-style platform for sea-level crew movements between vessels and offshore structures, accommodating 8 to 12 persons per lift. Unlike enclosed crane man baskets, frog baskets have no walls or gate, allowing rapid embarkation at sea level. Frog baskets are used offshore when conditions require fast crew movement without overhead crane suspension. SCS builds frog baskets to project specification with certified lifting arrangements per ISO 10855:2018.

Subsea basket for underwater equipment deployment

Subsea

Subsea Baskets

Subsea baskets are heavy-gauge containers designed for crane deployment below the waterline, supporting ROV operations, pipeline intervention, and seabed equipment placement. Construction uses heavier gauge steel with additional corrosion protection for prolonged immersion and sacrificial anodes for cathodic protection. SCS builds subsea baskets certified to DNV 2.7-1 and EN 12079 to the client's depth and corrosion specification.

Compliance

Personnel Transfer Basket Safety Standards

Personnel transfer basket safety requires DNV 2.7-1 for structural design, EN 12079 Part 3 for 12-month periodic examination, and proof loading to 2.0 times SWL per unit. Guardrails must reach minimum 1,100 mm. Pad-eyes are designed to 3 times SWL and proof-load tested to 2 times SWL. Every sling set carries an individual certificate per EN 12079 Part 2 section 5. The DNV 2.7-1 testing regime covers prototype static load test at 2.5x SWL, prototype dynamic load test at 1.1x SWL, production proof load test at 2.0x SWL on every unit, individual sling proof testing, and MPI/NDT weld inspection on all critical structural welds.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Three questions procurement and operations ask most often about offshore baskets.

What Is an Offshore Basket Used For?

These crane-rated containers serve three functions: personnel transfer between vessels and platforms, cargo lifting to offshore installations, and equipment supply for oil, gas, and energy operations. All types are certified to DNV 2.7-1 and EN 12079 for dynamic crane lifts.

What Certifications Do Offshore Baskets Need?

Requirements include EN 12079 (Parts 1 to 3), DNV type approval per 2.7-1 (DNVGL-ST-0009), load testing to 2.0 times SWL per unit, sling proof testing per set, and annual periodic examination.

What Is a Frog Basket?

A frog basket is an open-frame, net-style personnel transfer platform (Billy Pugh style) for sea-level crew transfers between vessels and platforms. Capacity is typically 8 to 12 persons per lift. Frog baskets are distinct from enclosed crane man baskets, with no wall or gate structure.
